London in Literature
From Conan Doyle to Ian McEwan, from Virginia Woolf to Monica Ali; London has always fascinated modern writers. A course looking at how writers have made London their subject from the late Victorian period up to the 21st century.
Tutor: Paul Crossley, who has taught drama to adults and drama students at Cambridge and London Universities in topics ranging from Elizabethan stage practice to Modern Irish drama. He is an actor and playwright and his work has been performed at Festivals in Cambridge and Edinburgh, and for the BBC. He has a particular interest in the development of the ‘New Drama’ in Britain from the Late Victorian period to the First World War. He has written a dissertation on the plays of Harley Granville Barker. Paul’s approach is not only to look at the plays themselves but to examine them in the context of changing social and cultural conditions and also explore the artistic challenges that force actors, producers and dramatists in transferring the page to the stage.
Venue: March and District Museum, High Street, March, Cambridgeshire, PE15 9JJ
Time: 11.00am to 1.00pm
Course Fee: £95.00

‘Living Well’ - Book signing & talk by Canon Alan Hargrave
Canon Alan Hargrave will be speaking about, and signing, copies of his new book ‘Living Well’, published by SPCK.
What does it mean to ‘live well’ when you are exhausted from juggling the demands of work or a young family? Or when you’ve been around long enough to be scarred by disappointment, frustration or failure? This book is about finding a ‘Rule of Life’ to revitalise and sustain us. It draws on wisdom from Benedict, Taizé, Iona and elsewhere to help us think about the pattern of our living. Through absorbing stories, honest and often very funny accounts of his own personal struggles, and with the aid of many helpful exercises, he aims to help us find our own ‘Rule of Life’ - one that will not only sustain us but allow the light which may have gone out of our eyes to shine once more.
Venue: Ely Cathedral, Ely, Cambridgeshire
Time: 7.00pm
Tickets £10 bought in advance include a copy of the book (£9.99) and a glass of wine, or simply turn up on the night.
